New Global Briefing: Brazil: Key Player in Global Beauty and Personal Care Growth
With double-digit year-on-year growth over 2003-2008, the Brazilian beauty industry is one of the fastest growing in the world. Coupled with the fact that 2008 value sales stood at US$29 billion, making it the third largest personal care market globally, it is no surprise that major beauty companies are clamouring to step up their presence in the country.

Caracas flights ‘new gateway to African, Asian travelers’
Aeropostal Alas de Venezuela will introduce a 164-seat MD-82 aircraft when it reactivates its Port of Spain-to-Caracas, Venezuela, route next month. The newest commercial airline to rejoin the Caribbean-to-Latin America air bridge, Aeropostal plans to offer more flights to help facilitate the under-serviced market. ’There is a large market here in Trinidad and Tobago. This is our number one market. We always have an additional plane in case of emergency for this market,’ said Francisco Medina, general manager at the Trinidad office.

Health and wellness EU legislation
The last few years have seen significant changes in the EU legislative arena, with several major pieces of legislation coming to fruition and yet more on the horizon. These include the extremely protracted regulations on nutrition and health claims and fortification in 2007, followed by the new organic legislation in 2009. Over the next two to three years, attention will also focus on overhauling the general labelling legislation, which will have an impact on all food manufacturers.

Venezuela’s Sidor January steel output off 61 per cent
Venezuelan steelmaker Sidor’s January output fell 61 per cent year-on-year due to energy rationing, a local newspaper reported on Thursday, following last year’s closure of some its facilities to save power. A prolonged drought has crippled the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) nation’s hydroelectric dams, creating a political headache for leftist President Hugo Chavez and opening the possibility Venezuela may have to close its aluminum, steel and bauxite operations. “Sidor reported a decline of 61.3 per cent in its volumes of liquid steel production, comparing to the months of January 2009 and January 2010,” said Pedro Acuna, who represents Sidor’s workers, in comments published in newspaper El Universal.

Latin America: Regional Profile
Latin America’s economy contracted in the first half of 2009 but a recovery should be swift. The region’s fiscal surpluses will probably disappear as public spending grows but real spending should rise fast, providing an important stimulus to demand. Caribbean economies lag behind other countries due to their excessive reliance on tourism and remittances. Latin America is still lumbered with a host of structural impediments including monopolies, bureaucracy and inflexible labour markets.
