SME Conference 2010- Creating Sustainable Entrepreneurship

ACCA in collaboration with the Business Development Company Limited (BDC) is pleased to present Creating Sustainable Entrepreneurship – an SME Conference which will take place on Monday October 4, 2010 at the Hyatt Regency Trinidad.

This full day Conference will explore issues relevant to the sustainability and international competitiveness of SMEs.

Leaders from both the public and private sectors will be included among the speakers along with newly installed ACCA President, Mr. Mark Gold.

Also carded to deliver a special address is the Honourable Errol McLeod, Minister of Labour and Small and Micro Enterprise Development.

The Seminar is worth 7 CPD Units and lunch and workshop materials are included.

TRADE AND INDUSTRY MINISTER TO SPEAK TO COUNTRY’S BUSINESS LEADERS

For the fourth consecutive year, roughly 250 of this country’s most influential and dynamic business minds will come together for the highly anticipated annual Excellence in Business Forum, which takes place on June 23, 2010, at the Hilton Trinidad and Conference Centre, St Ann’s.

The Honourable Stephen Cadiz, Minister of Trade and Industry will be speaking at the event, which boasts participants from various sectors of the economy. A former president of the Chaguanas Chamber of Industry and Commerce, Minister Cadiz has already expressed the Government’s commitment to diversifying the economy beyond the energy sector.

“One of the main pillars of this current administration is to expand trade outside gas and oil. Networking between government and the chambers of commerce is essential to developing a relationship which will close this gap,” he said in a recent interview.

Jointly hosted by the Business Development Company Limited (BDC) and Republic Bank Limited, the Excellence in Business Forum seeks to assist in developing the local business landscape by giving entrepreneurs and business owners the chance to network, share knowledge and learn from experts and leaders in various sectors.

President of BDC, Albert Chow, said that every year, the Excellence in Business Forum boasts a different theme, usually one that is relevant to the prevailing business climate. This year’s is Fearless Business – Taking Risks, Reaping Rewards.

“Whether they recognise it or not, business owners take risks every day. It’s an integral part of running your own enterprise. However, in these challenging economic times, the general tendency among businesses is to become risk averse, even fearful of making the bold choices that may have made them profitable in the first place,” said Chow.

Chow added that this year’s Forum was the perfect opportunity to remind the nation’s existing and aspiring entrepreneurs of the ‘No guts, no glory’ approach that is often necessary to achieve true success and sustainability in business. “Through this year’s exciting programme, we wanted to inspire audacity and a sense of fearlessness among the participants.”

Republic Bank, a perennial stalwart of the business community, is pleased to co-host the Forum as a part of an ongoing joint initiative to strengthen the country’s small and medium-sized enterprise sector, together with the BDC.

Dr. Ronald Ramkissoon, the Bank’s Senior Economist and a speaker at the event, said, “We could not have chosen a better theme for these times. Diversification of the T&T economy means diversifying into the kinds of non-energy businesses that will be highlighted on June 23.”

He added, “I strongly suspect that the national community is ready and that our businesses are ready to join those in emerging economies in promoting more rapid economic growth. Intelligent risk-taking is a crucial ingredient in the transformation of this economy and we look forward to sharing our insights and experiences.”

The Excellence in Business Forum features a keynote address by an international speaker – this year Jim Mc Cormick, a successful business executive and world record-holding skydiver.

Another highlight is the presentation segment where the local entrepreneurs share their stories and the lessons they’ve learned over the years of operating profitable companies.
